History

FLIGHT was owned for many years by Emil Thum, and for the last forty years by Bob Monson. She is the only boat built to the original Phil Rhodes design still floating. A wooden boat, she was the prototype for the Rhodes Bounty II, built in the 1950’s as the first successful fiberglass hulled production sailboat. She has both aluminum and wooden spars. She was maintained personally by Bob Monson and stored in winter at Rentner’s
Marine on the Calumet River. For many years she was moored in Montrose Harbor and known to be a very fast boat. A new electrical system including panels was installed in 2021. She is structurally sound and representative of boats designed by Phil Rhodes, one of the prominent yacht designers of the 20 th Century.

 

FLIGHT was recently acquired for Chicago Maritime Bicentennial and is expected to be restored and launched in 2027.
