classic fleet

Chicago Maritime Bicentennial plans to collect, restore and maintain a fleet of classic vessels to demonstrate the evolution of boating on the Lake and River since Chicago was "discovered" by Joliet and Marquette in 1673.  The fleet will include canoes, skiffs, sloops, schooners, power boats and a fireboat that protected Chicago for much of the last century.  The fleet will be assembled over the next ten years.  Individuals interested in helping to acquire, restore and maintain the fleet should contact Chicago Maritime Bicentennial.  Several historic vessels are currently under consideration.  Visitors to this site are encouraged to provide input.    

 

The first vessel acquired is a Friendship Sloop, characteristic of sailboats used during the last part of the 1800's by Chicago residents.  She is being restored by Chicago Maritime Bicentennial and will be the first of the classic fleet to be launched and available for training young boaters.
